RED REDUX is a 256-byte intro developed by Virtual Vision Group, presented at Multimatograf 2025. Designed for the ZX Spectrum 48K+AY and ZX Spectrum Next, it references the earlier 4KB intro, Red Supremacy, showcased at Speccy.PL Party 2025. Though a redux, it simplifies the original concept for a smaller format while retaining essential elements.
The intro integrates music composed by Kenotron, with modifications by RCL, and utilizes the ZX2 compression algorithm by Einar Saukas. Notably, it is one of the first ZX 256-byte intros to feature Protracker music, achieved through complex compression techniques to fit within the size constraints.
Functionally, RED REDUX runs on both 48K+AY and ZX Spectrum Next, without relying on ZX Spectrum ROM routines. This independence highlights the technical prowess of the developers, ensuring compatibility across platforms while maintaining the integrity of the original music and visuals.
The project stems from music compression experiments related to Red Supremacy, aiming to adapt the Kenotron soundtrack for a 256-byte format. Despite challenges, such as reducing register updates, the intro successfully delivers a compact yet engaging audiovisual experience.
