Action Arcade Game "Scrumper QL" (2025)

Scrumper QL is a classic arcade-style game originally developed for the ZX Spectrum by S.M. Wakefield and later converted for the Sinclair QL by Jim Waterman. The game was part of the Sinclair Programs magazine in 1983 and made its way to the QL in 2025 for the CSSCGC competition. The primary objective is to catch apples falling from the trees, reminiscent of a mischievous teenager's antics in the 1950s.

Players control the character using the O and P keys to move left and right. A speed boost can be activated with the SHIFT key, depleting the energy bar displayed on the screen. The goal is to catch as many apples as possible, scoring points for each one. Collecting 18 apples grants a bonus, and clearing two orchards rewards the player with an extra life.

The game package includes several files: scrumper_bas (SuperBASIC program), scrumper_bin (machine code for sprites), and scrumper_asm (assembly language). The game is notable for its slow speed, even slower than the original Spectrum version, unless enhanced with a Gold Card for faster performance.

Scrumper QL offers a nostalgic look back at early computer gaming, with its simple mechanics and charming graphics. The conversion process involved overcoming technical challenges, such as using machine code to manage sprite movements effectively.
