Arkanoid Back to Basic - Action Game for ZX Spectrum

Arkanoid Back to Basic is a tribute to the classic game Arkanoid Revenge of Doh, developed in pure BASIC for the ZX Spectrum 48K. It was presented at the Radastan Bytemaniacos contest in February 2022. The game challenges players to guide a paddle-shaped ship through 17 stages, aiming to destroy bricks on each screen using a bouncing ball. If the ball falls below the paddle, the player loses a life.

The game features various types of bricks, including basic colored bricks that are destroyed with a single hit, and more resilient ones that require two hits. Some bricks are unbreakable, causing the ball to bounce at sharp angles. Players can earn more points by completing stages quickly and collecting PowerUps.

There are seven types of PowerUps, such as GLUE, which makes the ball stick to the paddle, and LASER, which allows the paddle to shoot lasers at bricks. The game's main menu allows players to choose from three difficulty levels, affecting the paddle's width and the number of hidden PowerUps.

Technical details include the ball's movement in increments of 4 pixels and the use of 9 UDGs for the ball sprite. The game runs at approximately 7 FPS, employing various techniques to optimize performance. The game design includes different backgrounds and a state machine with 24 states, enhancing gameplay speed at the cost of memory usage.
