Carrier Command is a strategic and tactical simulation game released in 1989 by Realtime Games Software Ltd. The game is set in a futuristic world where players command a powerful aircraft carrier, the ACC Epsilon, to control an archipelago of islands. The main objective is to defeat the rival carrier, ACC Omega, controlled by the rogue STANZA Organization. The game combines strategy and action elements, allowing players to manage resources, construct island facilities, and engage in combat using various vehicles.
The storyline unfolds in the year 2166, when a massive tectonic shift creates new islands rich in resources. The government commissions two carriers, Epsilon and Omega, to exploit these resources. However, the Omega is hijacked, and players must use the Epsilon to counter its threat. The game features a detailed mission briefing that outlines the geopolitical and scientific background, emphasizing the strategic importance of the islands and the carriers.
Players can switch between "Pointer Mode" and "Direct Control Mode" to manage their carrier and vehicles. In Pointer Mode, they navigate menus and issue commands, while Direct Control Mode allows them to pilot vehicles like the Manta fighter planes and Walrus amphibious tanks. The game also includes a time-lapse feature to speed up actions, adding a layer of strategic depth to the gameplay. The control system supports keyboard, joystick, and mouse inputs, providing versatile options for players.
The islands are categorized into three alignments: Friendly, Enemy, and Neutral, each indicated by different colors. Players must strategically capture and fortify islands to expand their network and cut off the enemy's resources. The game also features a resource management system where players produce and transport equipment and supplies across their island network. The ultimate goal is to destroy or capture the enemy carrier and secure energy resources for the nation.
